Director: Guillem Morales (Spain 2011)
Produced by Guillermo Del Toro, Guillem Morales’s Spanish chiller tells the story of Julia (‘The Orphanage’s’ Belen Rueda), a woman who is slowly losing her sight while trying to prove the mysterious hanging of her twin sister was not suicide. Building Hitchcockian suspense, the unsettling beauty of the production is finally let down by a confused and increasingly senseless plot. That said, Morales has a remarkable command of summoning a palpable sense of atmosphere and Rueda’s excellent performance keeps the material fresh and forcefully involving.
