Director: Pieter Van Hees (Belgium – 2009)
Directed by Pieter Van Hees, Left Bank is at once a love story, a suspenseful thriller, and a bizarre tale steeped in folklore and horror. The film centres on Marie, (Eline Kuppens), a dedicated young athlete who is diagnosed with an immune infection and forced to rest.
After moving into Antwerp’s stylish Left Bank apartment with new boyfriend Bobby (Matthias Schoenaerts), Marie starts to uncover the secrets of the building. Recalling the uneasiness of Roman Polanski’s ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘The Tenant,’ Van Hees focuses on the character drama and dynamics, letting the supernatural elements bubble to the surface. Unsettling and remarkably effective.
