Director: Lee Daniels (US – 2009)
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, director Lee Daniels’ ‘Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,’ follows Clarice ‘Precious’ Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), an obese, illiterate, black high school teen in Harlem. Raped and pregnant for the second time by her father, she lives with her unthinkably abusive mother, Mary (Mo’Nique), who blames Precious for all her problems. After she’s kicked out of public school, Precious enrols in an alternative class and begins to find her voice.
Most notable for the emotionally shattering performances of newcomer Sidibe, and Mo’Nique, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, ‘Precious’ is a rarefied beauty, an innately human story that offers inspiration without sap, fleeting hope without contrivance and ultimate redemption with sincerity.
DVD extras include Daniels’ commentary, featurettes and Sidibe’s screen test.
